Semantic Measures: Using Natural Language Processing to Measure, Differentiate, and Describe Psychological Constructs

Abstract

This paper presents a novel approach using natural language processing for quantifying open-ended responses to measure psychological constructs. Comparing semantic measures to traditional numerical scales across nine studies (N=92–854), results indicate competitive or superior validity and reliability. Semantic measures complement traditional approaches by quantifying nuanced, natural language expressions, improving ecological and face validity in psychological assessments.
